The number of young people supported by the project

Young people involved in YEP’s ‘Heart-Not-Knives’ project take part in: Arts, Music, Video Production, Lyric/poetry writing.

They will also attend a variety of networking events:

  • Police VIP tours,
  • Intercultural Evenings and events,
  • 1CityCelebration event

During 2019-2020 approximately 100 – 120 young people were involved in Youth Education Projects ‘Heart-Not-Knives’ activities.

The number of events/workshops/sessions that took place during this period

Young people that join YEP’s ‘Heart-Not-Knives’ project will have access to a variety of workshops to raise awareness, inform and develop their knowledge and understanding of wider social issues. Workshops include:

  • Drug awareness sessions,
  • County lines sessions,
  • First aid sessions,
  • East Midlands Ambulance anti-knife session,
  • Prevent awareness sessions,
  • Sexual harassment (CSE) Awareness
  • Online Safety

All sessions are infused with art and music based activities, video production and lyric writing as well as a creative direction/stage choreography sessions and fashion and design!

Young people have the opportunity to attended Leicester’s 1CityCelebration (festival and award evening)!

Wider support agencies

YEP’s ‘Heart-Not-Knives’ project works hard to ensure young people have access to wider support services, agencies and professionals when needed.

Any support offered will be assessed, discussed and will meet the needs of the young person.

Support offered may include access to:

  • A dedicated youth worker/mentor –
  • Access to counselling and support services
  • Access to alternative therapists
  • Access to drug advice and support services
  • To sports and positive activities
  • Support accessing social care service
  • Respite/time out activities offered to families via our Out Reach Project services

YEP Community Engagement Projects

  • Working with DMU on a project to raise awareness around Human Trafficking and Child Sexual Exploitation. The project involves a combination of art, drama, music, spoken word and literacy and will be presented by YEP learners on 18th May as part of DMU’s International Conference: “Human Trafficking & Child Sexual Exploitation – Violence against the vulnerable”

  • Working with British Red Cross – rolling out a series of workshops to engage young people with a focus on Anti-Stigma and promoting British Values (May – June)

  • Changing perceptions project – YEP in partnership with Colab2, Leicestershire County Cricket Club delivered a fitness programme with a focus on cricket. The group of young people worked on a social action project to challenge the perceptions society has of young people and the perceptions young people have about the police and other services within their community.

  • Sport and Employability Programmes – In partnership with Colab2, Sports in You, – 12 week offsite activities aimed at improving youth fitness, developing key employability skills with the potential of young people securing paid employment.

Other Events / Festivals

Pro-Artist Events delivered by Colab2, EAVA FM & 2Funky – offering live open mic events. To provide a safe forum for Young people to perform at live events in Leicester

Supersonic Boom – YEP working with ~ Colab2, EAVA FM and various local artists take part in this annual festival, offering young people opportunities to perform at live local events.

EAVA FM – Young people have the opportunity to develop skills knowledge and take part in broadcast shows live on community radio.
