REMOTE TEACHING
Remote Teaching Offer / Strategy January 2021
During Lockdown periods, all registered students are expected to remain in contact with all of their tutors and to attempt / complete the work that is set. All students have either been supplied with a YEP laptop or have confirmed that they have access to a computer at home, which they will be able to use to complete their work. If students have stated a preference to work on paper, then all resources will have been supplied to them in this format. If working on paper, it is the responsibility of the student to photograph any work that they complete and email back to their tutors via their ‘YEP’ Gmail account.
Every class/group has an individual ‘Google Classroom’, through which direct contact between tutor and students is maintained. All work and assignments are set through ‘Google Classroom’ and are specific to each class.
Your tutors will be available on ‘Google Meet’ (Video conferencing software) for the duration of your timetabled sessions and are additionally available through email outside of these hours. These are your opportunities to pose any questions you might have about the work and to receive any support that you will need.
Positive registers marks are generated in the following manner:
- During a timetabled session, learners access/join the ‘Google Meet’ session with their tutor (It is not mandatory to have the camera on, but it is mandatory to have your microphone on). You will receive invites to these sessions via your Gmail account.
AND/OR
- Learners respond directly via the Google Classroom or Google ‘Hangouts’ to their tutors within the timetabled session, confirming that they have received the set work. Individual pieces of work will have different deadlines, and these will be agreed between tutors and learners. You will receive your work back marked and with feedback within a timescale of 2 weeks, often sooner.
Actions that can be taken to support learning include the following:
- Routine: Get up and dressed, have breakfast as if attending the Centre and prepare yourself for learning.
- Organisation: Keep your folders, notes, pens/pencils, equipment altogether and in a safe place – a box or bag is a good idea.
- Place: Try and find a quiet place to learn and do your work, preferably with a table and chair – we know this may be hard to do, so our tutors can be flexible about deadlines for the submission of work if you find that you are only able to work ‘out of hours’ in your home setting.
- Be prepared: Know the timetable and what you are doing each day, and if you have access to a device get it ready to log on, check you have battery or socket, use to join to lessons or use to work on or for research.
- Ask for help: Communication is key to your success – please do not hesitate to ask for direction, help, guidance and feedback.
The provision of ‘Face-to-Face’ sessions under lockdown
YEP understands its responsibility to provide face to face sessions for those learners who are classed as ‘vulnerable’. This classification is in place where a learner is in possession of an EHCP (Education, Care and Health Plan), or they are in Local Authority Care (or are a Care Leaver [18+]). Learners attending face to face sessions in the centre will continue to receive their bursaries paid into their bank accounts to cover travel to and from the centre.
All vulnerable learners in the academic year have been contacted directly by Lee Walker and face to face teaching for these learners began in the week commencing 18th January 2021).
There can be some exceptions to this rule and if you are (or your child is) facing particular hardship in engaging with remote teaching, please contact Lee Walker on 07399 644 049 to discuss and arrange.
If you feel that you (or your child) should be classed as vulnerable and you have not been contacted by Lee Walker, please also call 07399 644 049.
Work Experience
All planned work experience placements have been placed on hold from January 2021 and will be rearranged for post-lockdown.
General Enquiries should call Nikki Goodchild on the main mobile number 07804 946 383
Safeguarding
Safeguarding and your welfare is at the heart of everything that we do at YEP and you should receive a ‘check-up’ phone call from one of the senior managers at least once a week (especially if you are not engaging well with your tutors). It is really important that you maintain contact over this period, so that we can help to promote your welfare and to support you with any issues you may have (outside of the academic work).
Again, the numbers to call if you need any help are as follows:
Lee Walker 07399 644 049 – lwalker@youtheducationproject.org.uk
Nikki Goodchild 07804 946 383 – ngoodchild@youtheducationproject.org.uk
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Ken White is available on
